New York, NY. October 14, 2015 – Shred-it International, along with its partners, the Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, today announced that they are now accepting submissions for the ninth annual Good Riddance Day contest.
The contest, which concludes with a Good Riddance Day event, encourages people to say goodbye to the bad, and get a fresh start to the new year by shredding their unwanted memories. Shred-it will park a mobile shredding truck in Times Square so participants can securely destroy the items that anchor them to past memories and experiences they’d rather forget.
“New Year’s has long been a time for people to make a fresh start by casting out the things that hold them back from embracing something new,” said Bruce Andrew, SVP at Shred-it. “Good Riddance Day builds on that tradition by not only giving participants the opportunity to gain closure by symbolically destroying the negative in their life, but doing so in a sustainable way.”
All the shredded material generated on Good Riddance Day will be baled and sent to nearby recycling plants to be turned into something usable like everyday paper products and all while saving resources. For every ton of paper shredded and recycled 17 trees, 4,100 kilowatts of energy and 3.5 cubic yards of landfill space will be saved.
“As we approach the annual New Year’s Eve celebration it is always important to reflect on the year past and move forward with a clean slate,” added Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance. “Good Riddance Day gives us the chance to do so by giving people the opportunity to shred and recycle their forgettable memories from 2015 at the Crossroads of the World.”
Shred-it invites anyone hoping for a fresh start to bring a load down to Times Square and participate in this annual ritual.
“Nothing says fresh start like a house or office that has been purged of the things that remind us of our frustrations, failures and faults,” said Jeffrey Straus, President, Countdown Entertainment. “Here in Times Square, we are excited to encourage all New Yorkers and visitors alike to join us in the shedding and shredding, of forgettable memories from the past year.”
