Law firms must realize that human error and lack of internal protocols are the leading causes of a data breach.

There is a common misperception that information security breaches and privacy are the result of a digital data breach, however the 2019 DPR confirms that human error is the primary cause of a breach. Law firms need to recognize and understand the importance of information security and better train their staff or suffer the consequences.

Human Error is the leading source of a potential data breach

pie chart

Only 28% of legal professionals train their employees on information security procedures twice a year or more frequently.

About the Data Protection Study & Report

In its 9th year, this survey identifies the insights, opinions and best practices of data protection among Small Business Owners (SBOs), C-Suite Executives (C-Suites) and members of the public at large from across the country to help Canadians better navigate this changing privacy landscape. The goal is to uncover – and quantify – both the risks and opportunities Canadian businesses and consumers face, including the upsides and downsides of mishandling data and/or being breached. While the previous reports were branded as the Shred-it State of the Industry Report, this year it has been renamed to the Shred-it Data Protection Report – a name that more closely reflects the focus of the report and the value of the intelligence it provides.
