Are You Protecting Hotel Guest Data This Way?

 is September 27... and it’s a good time to think about information security best practices in hotels.

Hotel guests always pack a lot of confidential data when they travel including passports, travel itineraries, and credit and debit cards.

According to a recent Shred-it infographic, nearly 9 out of 10 data breaches in the hospitality industry involved a point-of-sale (POS) system where card present transactions occur (such as front desks and retailers associated with the hotel stay).

It is important that guests know hotels are doing everything they can to protect confidential information in their systems – before, during and after their stay.

When guests arrive, be sure to provide useful information about security features in the hotel such as where to access locked storage, on-site shredding disposal, and network ports.

According to a recent article published by Leisure and Hospitality International, there are three important point of sale security best practices for the hospitality industry.

  1. Risk Assessment – Identify security strengths and weaknesses.  
  2. Restrict Access – Limit the opportunities employees have to cause harm with strict access controls.
  3. Employee Training – Schedule on-going information security training and embed data security processes in the workplace.
