Hundreds attend BBB and CCCS “Secure Your ID Day”

31,000 pounds (15 tons) of Material Properly Destroyed to Prevent Identity Theft

Upstate, NY – October 26, 2010 – To help consumers and small businesses, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS) held “Secure Your ID Day” this past Saturday at Tops Markets in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. Nearly 1,000 New Yorkers attended the event to have their personal documents destroyed responsibly at no charge thanks to event sponsor Shred-it who reported that about 31,000 pounds or just over 15 tons of material were destroyed.

“The participants were overwhelmingly grateful to have this opportunity,” said David Polino, Better Business Bureau President. “Many were thankful to save time while watching the job being done in seconds; yet others expressed they’d suffered losses and felt they had few resources to help them properly dispose of their loved ones personal documents. They expressed fear to just toss it and were correct in hesitating since crooks are willing to steal anyone’s past or present information for their own financial gain.”
